What is Juice Cleansing and Why Should I Do It?

Juice cleansing is traditionally a liquid fast during which people abstain from solid food and consume only  juice for a set period of time (typically 3-6 days). Here are just a few of the many health benefits that can result from performing a juice cleanse:

 Rest and repair the stomach, gut, and liver
Consuming  juice gives your stomach, gut and liver a break from the stress of digesting (particularly processed) foods.
 Provide a nutrient superboost to the body
Because our juice is 100% raw, it is dense in vital nutrients and enzymes which aid in repairing your bodily systems (such as the digestive tract) while you are resting them.
 Mental and physical reset
Juice cleansing provides both a physical and mental reminder that we are what we eat. Saturating the body with nutrients instead of processed foods reduces general aches, congestion, bloating, and improves energy. The structure of juice cleansing also provides a psychological boost that improves food decision making, limits the habit of comfort eating, and facilitates true changes in eating habits.
 Weight loss (although that is not our goal here at Saints)
Juice cleansing is meant to be a means to a healthier end and not a tool for crash dieting. However, people do often find that removing processed foods from their diet results in some degree of weight loss.
Like everything in life, juicing is not for everyone. Please check with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, diabetic, underweight, or have any general health concerns before consuming raw juice or initiating a juice cleanse.

Tips for Cleansing

Before the cleanse
Preparation is essential to optimizing your juice cleanse experience. We highly recommend these healthy lifestyle modifications at least 3 days prior to starting your juice cleanse:
 HYDRATE. Adequate water consumption improves gut health, flushes out bodily toxins, reduces food cravings, and is a vital component of a successful juice cleanse. We recommend starting the day with a glass of hot water with lemon or cup of herbal tea.
 Remove nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, added sugar, dairy, animal products and gluten from your diet. This will help adjust your mindset and prepare your body for detoxification.
 Make an extra effort to consume whole foods such as fruits and vegetables. Avoid processed and packaged foods.

During the cleanse
You’re off to the races! Here are some things to keep in mind to stay on the path to success:
 Again, HYDRATE. Each juice you consume is flooding your body with nutrients. Drinking adequate amounts of water ensures that these nutrients are properly digested and absorbed.
 Because you are taking in less calories than your body is used to, we recommend easing up on your normal workout routine. Light exercises including yoga, walking, gentle jogging and swimming are ok, just listen to your body and do what feels right for you.
 Get ample rest.
 Don’t stress! The purpose of a juice cleanse is to give your body an opportunity to relax and reset. Every body is different and it’s totally fine if you need to supplement your juice with solid foods. Raw nuts, vegetables, and fruit are excellent snack options while cleansing.

After the cleanse
Congratulations, you’re done! While it’s tempting to indulge after several days of virtue, it’s important to remember the importance of maintaining and maximizing the detoxifying effects of your cleanse. Here are some guidelines to prevent your new beginning from coming to an unhappy end:
 Slowly reintroduce food. We recommend starting with small meals throughout the day incorporating both solids and liquids.  
 Fuel your body with whole foods including fruits and vegetables. Avoid processed foods and animal products.
 Choose whole grains that are gluten free including quinoa, millet, and buckwheat.
